Hydroquinone is a crystalline organic substance, diatomic phenol. Like all phenols, it is easily oxidized in air. Hydroquinone is slightly soluble in water, but dissolves well in organic solvents (acetone, alcohol, ethers). In the cold, hydroquinone reduces silver ions.
Hydroquinone is used as a developer in photography, as an antioxidant in the production of vinyl monomers, rubber products, food products, dyes, drugs, and photoreagents.
